Expansion of the A&E department at the University of North Durham

Work has started on the expansion of the A&E department at the University of North Durham.

Dryburn House opposite the A&E, will be demolished to make way for the 2 storey extension.

Dryburn House built in 1824 was once the home of railway baron William Lloyd Wharton (1789-1867), who ran the North East Railway Company. Dryburn House was later used as part of the hospital. Dryburn was an emergency military hospital during the 1940s, before the University of North Durham was built next door.

When William Lloyd Wharton was the Sheriff of the County of Durham and the Squire of Dryburn, he founded Durham Regatta. He also created Wharton Park which was donated to the city of Durham in 1915 by his family.
